We’ll let them have it
Yes, it was disappointing that the Sox didn’t sweep the Yankees in their last duel on the Yankees Stadium. It would have been a sweet way to make a stand in their own turf, just before the lights go out.
But I can live with giving them their last game. As much as I was raised to despise anything pinstriped (I challenge you to find a pinstriped suit in my wardrobe!), the Yankee Stadium represented a big era.
It was the first of its kind, having the audacity to call itself such a grand appellation as a stadium, versus the more modest titles of “park” or “field” used as popular choice in its time.
It was the home of one of the most dominant baseball teams in the past century, and still held strong at the turn. Despite its ups and downs in the 70s, 80s, and even part of the 90s, the Yankees were a formidable force in baseball.
No matter how little one knew about baseball, if one were to name a baseball great, it probably would be on the the Yankees legends. Babe Ruth. Mickey Mantle. Joe DiMaggio.
So, I’ll take the ending we were delivered. A sounding win and loss. And how appropriate it was that Giambi delivered that final stroke. How coincidental. Yet, how appropriate, that it would be an aging player from a fading era to delivery the final hoorah against the Red Sox.
Holy crap!
How does one explain the exclamation and the wince one experiences when one comes home in the wee hours of the morn after a long and late workday, logs online only to see a final score of 15-9, Yankees?
Long games help absentminded fans
Wow. Didn’t think I would be able to still watch the game. Am currently on the Left Coast for business. Came on in time to see Pedroia tag Cabrera.
Exciting moments of the game that I was lucky enough to catch:
- Double-play by Pedroia in the 8th
- Coco and Pedroia in the 8th.
- Lopez almost force Abreu to a face surgery. (damn. I’m not sure I’d be all the calm if I were Abreu.
- Casey saving Lugo of another error with a fantastic base catch and out on Abreu.
- A-Rod striking out (apparently the second of the night!)
- Delcarmen closing, effectively.
Observations:
- Wow. Coco and Ellsbury on the same line-up. Two of the Sox’s fastest runners and most effective base stealers. Must be quite a show.
Have thoughts about the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry. Will probably post it in time for the next match up later this week.

I’m busy, busy, busy, hence the lack of posting lately. Worry not (or do worry, depending on your perspective!), I shall get back in the groove as soon as I get a chance.
In the meantime, I cheer yet again for my favourite player.

Whadya think, Beckett? Aim for another 20-win season? Perhaps exceed it? 19 to go, then. No pressure. Seriously. Although winning 20+ more would be nice as well.
Other thoughts:
- Anyone else worried about Ortiz’s silence? As much on a roll as Manny is in, it can’t hide the DH’s lack thereof.
They don’t need to hate the Red Sox anymore.
Whoever said baseball was boring clearly doesn’t watch enough to judge.
Even spring training.
Looks like the Yankees are all fired up already. And it’s not even against the Red Sox. Yet, the news doesn’t surprise me. I can’t help wonder what tone Girardi is trying to set for the team.
Bye bye, Torre.
Cleveland wins and clinches the ALCS berth against the Red Sox. The fact that they accomplished that in the hostile territory of the Bronx makes me respect them even more. It’ll be a match between two strong teams. I like to think the Red Sox is stronger and has a better chance but this is baseball, and we don’t know until it happens.
This may be the last time we see Torre in the Yankees jersey. It’s too bad. He really did lead the team through a huge winning streak and a reputation for being the best. It’s hard to stay up there. I don’t believe we’ve seen the end of Torre, though, although he may be sporting different colours. He’s got a huge record to back up his credentials.
Sabathia and Beckett. Now, that’s what I like to see.
For now. To bed. Way past bedtime on a schoolnight.
In conclusion
I swear: I shall not mock my friends and colleagues who are O’s fans, for a very very very long time. Until next year’s season, when the fun starts all over again 
Extra Innings: I am nervous about the competition against the Yankees in the play offs, if it reaches that point. Yankees have proven themselves a formidable opponent. They caught up on such a huge lead the past two months and they trounced the Sox in the last match-up series. A-rod has been hot at the batter’s box, as much as I hate to admit it. The fact that the Yankees have been falling to extra innings games and blowing run leads makes me wonder. Is it a sign of games to come? What’s going on over there?
Only in Fenway: I didn’t think to stay up to follow the Yankees-Os game. It seemed like they had such a dominant lead over the Os. Yet, I should not have been surprised and merely amused to hear that the fans watching the Twins-Sox game at Fenway stayed to await the end of the Yankees game. Those fans were there longer than the team captain!!

clinch verb 1 confirm or settle conclusively….
I can’t call this a “clinch”. The win of the title has been settled, no doubt, but it took a rush all the way to the end of the season to conclude and decide.
I repeat my assertion from an earlier post.. at least in the AL side the house, it’s going to be a lot of tough competition to make it through the pennant race. Red Sox and Red Sox fans alike, we’re in for a bumpy ride. I’m confident the Red Sox has what it takes; they didn’t win the division title by fluke. They just need to perform their best and nothing but the best.
In summary: Thank you, Red Sox for getting the division title. It’s been a while and I really really wanted you to win this badly. People keep saying the most important thing is that you make it to the play offs and play well. I’ll admit: I wanted you to make division title, and break a 10+ year drought. Winning the play offs would be icing on cake for me.
Grand slams
I’m listening to the WEEI broadcast, double-broadcasted through XM satellite radio. The cheering in the background has grown to a roar and I couldn’t quite figure out why. Until I checked “Extra Bases” where I go for a more personal account of the game when the basic facts on the box score listing doesn’t satisfy my. What I found:

Good heavens! 14 innings!?!? Toronto scoring, finally… but still have to finish the bottom inning to see if Yankees catch up.
Toronto, I won’t be so irate with you if you whoop the Yankees as well. If you’re going to give the Sox a whooping, might as well do the same for the Yankees to even the field out

Aside: this sorry state of a Sox fan is reduced to watching the game on espn.com scoreboard, those little red and green dots go on and off for the strike, ball, and out counts. I’m really waiting for my laundry, I swear!
Title
You know, when I racked my uncreative brain for a name for this blog, I came up with “angst” in a pretty self-deprecating way. But I didn’t want it to become reality!!! Now I spend a lot more time and energy worrying about baseball than is really healthy, at any standard.
So, am I disappointed? Heck, yes. Am I angry? No, not really. Beckett gained a win, which was some consolation. But I still walked away from this series crushed and I’m going to munch on comfort food, chocolate, and curl up under my blankets in bed for as long as I’m allowed. I’ve got a couple of doctors’ appointments coming up.. let them see what Soxitis Depression looks like.
